FIVE-FAST-FACTS about Jackson Hole area & Jackson Hole Resort

1. FUR: The area established its roots in the beaver fur trapping trade, making negotiations with local Indians. Certain tradesmen were the best in the world, with associations to the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition, as far back as 1806. 


2. THE WILD WEST: William "Buffalo Bill" Cody organized "Buffalo Bill's Wild West," a touring circus show that lasted 30 years Nationally as all as Internationally through Europe and beyond. This show is largely considered a benchmark for exposing the world to the Country Lifestyle, thus, Wyoming being dubbed "The Cowboy State."


3. WOMEN of the WEST: In 1869 Wyoming's government became the first in US history to allow women to vote, 51 years before the U.S. Constitutional amendment. In the specific area of Jackson, in 1920 an all-woman council was elected, including a female mayor, giving Wyoming its nickname, the "Equality State."


4. GEOLOGICAL SUPER-STAR: Yellowstone is the worlds first National Park, named 18 years before Wyoming became a state. The area is famous for: Glacial Lakes, rare Botanic and Paleontological discoveries. 


5. SKIERS PARADISE: The Jackson area is known for many skiing related accolades, as well as many "firsts" in the industry; First use of two poles to make turns. Prior, people would use one pole in the middles of their legs to stop.  First development of a "ski circus." Ski Clubs dating back to 1880. Olympic training course for many in the 30's. Jackson Peak was home to the First "ski cabin" for long expeditions. 1964 JHMR was built, and then hosted the First International race in the area. In 2004 a permanently closed inbound area named "The Crags" was re-opened, allowing 200 acres of expert terrain to the Resort. In 2008 $32 Million dollars are invested to build a new tram, carrying 100 passengers 4,139 vertical feet in 9 minutes, the longest continual vertical rise of any lift in the U.S. John Simms of the JHMR Ski Patrol invented Life-Links avalanche probe & Bobbie Fuller invented a strap to keep his sunglasses on, named Croakies,found all over the world.
